<lead><![CDATA[SAYRE One of the fastest land animals in world, the greyhound is not only used for its racing abilities, but it can be a perfect pet. Many local residents have come to love these animals as they have adopted through the Sayre satellite of the Keystone Greys organization. The group was formed in Harrisburg six years ago and has since been responsible for the adoption of over 600 greyhounds many straight from racetracks or research facilities.]]></lead>
<text><![CDATA[The Sayre satellite of the organization, run by Janet and Hal Lambert, is responsible for roughly 20 percent of the adoptions of the organization, with over 50 dogs have been adopted during its four years in existence, according to Lambert. The Lamberts adopted a greyhound named Starr Gospel around six years ago, which was the first in the area. After adopting a second dog named Dillon, the couple became active in the organization and were asked around four years ago to start a satellite group, which covers a 60- mile radius surrounding Sayre. Lambert said this satellite covers locations as far as Wellsboro, Corning and Binghamton.Sam and Debbie Moore head the community outreach program where they visit organizations such as libraries, schools and nursing homes. In these meetings, the organization educates the audience about the dogs as a breed, their life in dog racing, the animals as pets, and the adoption of the dogs.Debbie Moore said nursing home residents and children really enjoy the program and seeing the greyhounds.Lambert said he has been told the nursing home residents are more animated than normal when they see the dogs and the height of the animals works well with reaching wheelchairs.Melissa Soper, a nurse by trade and adoptive owner of two greyhounds, works with special needs children and takes the dogs with her to work on occasion because of their mild manner.Lambert also said one dog adopted from the satellite has become a certified therapy dog.RacingMany greyhounds are bred to be ideal racing dogs through matches of two winning parents to potentially create the ideal racer, said Moore. Others are bred to become show dogs. She added that the animals begin racing around 14 months after they are trained and ready, with many being taken to Oklahoma for training. The animal has six races to win, place or show before they are retired, according to Moore. The body of these animals are designed for racing and reach average speeds of 35 to 38 miles per hour, said Moore, with the highest racers reaching speeds of roughly 45 miles per hour. The animals deep chests accommodate a larger cardiac and respiratory system which gives them the highest oxygen content in the blood for a dog. Soper said this is why veterinarians prefer to use greyhound blood for transfusions. The larger hind muscles serve as the drive gear, according to Moore, and the front legs are used for steering. She said the dogs take eight steps in a cycle of running and twice during this time their legs do not touch the ground. They are sprinters, not distant runners, said Moore, adding that it only takes three strides for the dogs to reach full speed. While racing, the dogs run on 550, 650, and 750 yard tracks. To start the training, a lure is put on a rope to have the dog chase and they learn how to run straight back and forth, said Moore. After this, they are trained on running in circles.Once the dog has begun losing races or there is an injury, Moore explained they are retired to prevent further injury.AdoptionLambert said when a person is interested in owning a greyhound, the head of the satellite near them meets with the potential owner to talk about the breed and ensure it is the best choice for the animal and the owner. After this the president of the organization, Dianne Shadle, profiles the dog and potential owner to make sure the right dog is selected for the right person. He said if a person wants to help provide for the animals, but may not want to own them permanently, there is always a need for foster parents. These people would take in the animals for a few weeks, with the longest amount of time being up to six months, and if a permanent home is found for the animal, the foster family has first pick if they would like to keep the greyhound. The Moores have six greyhounds. Moore said she liked the idea of adopting a mild-mannered breed that served man and needed a home after that life. The couple started with one greyhound named Lawyer four years ago, explained Moore, and when he became lonely since the breed generally like to be in packs they decided to get a second. The Lamberts had a third dog looking for a home so the couple added another to their family and then fostered two dogs they decided to keep. They later added a sixth greyhound, which are now seen being walked by the couple around the Valley. She said she likes to expose them to town because they live in the country and she wants to keep them aware of the world.Soper adopted two dogs that had raced and then went to a facility in Texas for two years to be used as blood donors. She said this complex was closed because it was not a good facility. After she found out the animals had rough lives and did a service, she wanted to care for them after retirement. She said the dogs are now very happy and are wonderful pets. Soper added that she was unsure of having the dogs in an apartment, but it has never been an issue. Soper goes for a three-mile-walk with the dogs daily which she said helps both her and the dogs. After back surgery, she wanted to walk more, and this way she and the animals both get the exercise they need. They are perfect walking dogs, said Soper, adding that her dogs do not get distracted with other dogs on walks.Soper joked that her daughter said the animals are more like people than dogs.Greyhound BreedThe only dog mentioned in the Holy Bible, in Proverbs 30:29-31, King James Version, the greyhound breed is several thousands of years old, according to Moore. She added they were popular in Europe to catch stag to feed its family. The dogs became popular with royalty, explained Moore, and racing began as a way to entertain royalty as the dogs would chase a live lure.Moore said greyhounds are a gentle, loving, sweet, patient, intelligent well-mannered breed. She said the dogs are receptive to being loved and appreciate being cared for by their owners. If you want a guard dog, they arent the dog to get, said Moore. However, she said they are very aware and let their owners know if something is wrong.Lambert said the dogs are raised with thousands of greyhounds so they are used to other dogs and many are good with children and some are good with cats or small dogs. Because the dogs travel in packs, Moore said if her dogs are in a stressful situation, they tend to pack off and lean on each other for support. At the first sign of defense, they come running to support each other, said Moore as she explained the dogs are like a family. The dogs also have 270 degrees of peripheral vision which is equally matched to their forward vision, according to Moore. The dogs like to sleep most of the day, according to Lambert. However, Moore said her dogs like to be as active as their owners. They want to be everywhere we are, said Moore, adding that the dogs are adventurous and curious.Because the breed has a lower body fat, with only 6 percent body fat when racing, and only one coat, according to Moore, owners have to watch for sunburns and the dogs get chilled quick. As a result, they are generally indoor dogs that live to around 14 years. Lambert also said most people that are allergic to dogs are not allergic to Greyhounds. For more information on the organization, the website is keystonegreys.org.
